An always evolving living room

My decorating taste is always changing. A lot of the furniture we have in our house has been handed down to us. While I am so grateful for all the stuff we didn't have to buy, I am gradually wanting to get rid and get stuff that fits our own style.  I say "our" but it's really mine I guess ha.  Erik doesn't really get involved in the decorating and leaves it up to me.  I am really thankful for that! I used to be more on the traditional side, but I am really get into the more modern/vintage/whimsical style.  Is that even a thing?  I don't know ha, but I tend to like all different types of decor and I just mix it all together.  I think it works :)

Our mantel has been a challenge.  We are renting this home and the fireplace is all brick which I LOVE, but I am not in love with the color it is painted or the walls in the living room.  We probably could paint it if we asked, but I'd rather wait until we own our home to get the paint colors I want.  The colors aren't bad, but our living room doesn't get the most amount of light since it is a south facing room.  The mantel color is dark, but it is also the first thing you see when you walk into the room.  I feel like everything I have put up there doesn't pop the way I want it to.  I needed something to stand out while also being simple.
These butterfly prints were hanging in the hallway and I thought I'd see what they looked like hanging above the mantel.  I LOVE how they look.  Simple yet bold.  My husband isn't sure why we have butterflies in our house, but I told him just to trust me ha!

They really pop up against that dark grey color I think.  Just a few simple vases and of course my fox go perfect.

Another part of the room I couldn't get right was the coffee table.  We used to have a different one that wasn't even a coffee table, but we used it as one.

During Christmas when my mom was here we went to West Elm and they had a sale so I decided to splurge and get a coffee table that I love.  Plus I wanted something that can transition with me seeing as how my style is always changing.  I think this one is perfect!

The coffee table, pillows, tray, and red basket are from West Elm as well.  The owl I scored at Ross for $13!  As you can see, I am digging adding some wildlife to the room (see the antlers around the owl?)  I bought another Owl at West Elm, but it's in the kitchen.
The rug I got a few months ago as well on www.rugsusa.com  It was 70% off which was the only way I could afford it.  I loved it!  It is wool so it is a little high maintenance  but it should get better over time.

I am loving the living room right now!
What's not pictured is a piece of furniture on the left that is about to go under a huge makeover! I can't wait to share!

Are there any rooms in your house that you are constantly changing?  It's so much fun shopping around...on a budget of course :)
